Migraine Awareness Month 8: Please turn off the computer light?

Prompt: Most Migraineurs have issues with light sensitivity. What do you do to cope with it?

Hmmm…. I’m not sure how to answer this. My husband, who isn’t a Migraineur, has more problems with sunlight than I do. The sunglasses are always glued to his head- even on cloudy days when there’s a glare.

As for me, the sunglasses (I can’t believe I just broke my most comfy Migraine sunglasses) only come out when I’m in the midst of a Migraine.

The light that gets me is flicker from electronic devices, lights, CFL’s , etc. Trigger central. In fact, before we bought our TV, we went “test driving” at Best Buy- and I’d stare at each of them, to see if I could see the flicker. Luckily, we found that, for me at least, the TVs made by Vizio seems to be okay.

If I use my husband’s computer monitor, it gets me within 5 minutes, and I’m nauseous… and total Migraine trigger. Which stinks, because he has a ton of good games on his computer in the room that has the tv. Also, if he wants to show me something, I can’t look at it on his screen.

However, due to the fact that we’re both fairly creative people, and wanted to remedy the issue, we have gotten around that problem in the past few months. We used HDMI cables to connect the computer output to the TV.

So, now the TV can serve as his his monitor sometimes. It’s a bit strange, but I’m now able to play his games! One of which is Roller Coaster Tycoon, and in the new version, you can build coasters and “ride on them”- getting the perspective that the people on the ride would have. Due to my neck, that’s about as close as I’m getting to a roller coaster.

Does light affect you?
